The limits of human endeavour are expanding ever further into what has always been thought of as inhospitable regions. This makes it possible to found settlements and power plants in the sea or underground. Space is also becoming more appealing. Asteroids rich in raw materials could supply the Earth with valuable resources that will one day run out on our planet. Innovations enable humans to survive in highly hostile surroundings.
A 3D printer that supplies space travellers with food and spare parts is one such example, as are robots that provide medical care. In addition, space tourism promises to be a highly lucrative market. Is this science fiction? Maybe. But projects by visionaries with plenty of capital such as Elon Musk’s space company SpaceX are working to fathom out what is possible for the human race.
