The crowd can arise on social platforms either spontaneously, as with the dreaded shitstorms, or is targeted directly, as with political petitions or the collective development of ideas and concepts as forms of crowdsourcing.
The phenomenon may also involve participative advertising campaigns in social media, collaborative urban planning projects or scientific ventures. Project-funding via the crowd is referred to as crowdfunding or crowdinvesting.
An example of crowdfunding could be a group of musicians who try to have their new album funded in advance by their fans. Crowdinvesting, on the other hand, is more akin to a form of investment with a share in the profits or company.
